When entrepreneurship strikes a homemaker mom it definitely leads her to a journey she would have imagined in her dreams! Today, I will share with you a story of a mom who wanted her daughters to eat good food like all other mothers but this is what helped her win in the quest of her passion! Cooking –The great Indian Food from Scratch!
Meet the Kulars!
Mom Jaswant Kular always wanted good food for her children and here by good I mean She always wanted authentic Indian Food for her children in Canada! She loved making all of her delicacies from scratch! And this helped them design a way of business which was soon going to become a trend!
As kids, Nimi, Roupi, and Simi were urged to focus on their studies, while their mom, Jaswant, spent hours each day cooking traditional Indian dishes for the family.Nimi always wanted to cook just like her mom but the exact same spices hand taste would never be the same! And this is what made them think that this actually is a great idea of any lady struggling to get the same taste and who has no idea of Indian Cooking just like Nimi! So there journey began with gifting food boxes to relatives to becoming the most searched brand in Canada Food stores!
I have got the checkpoints the Kular women followed in their entrepreneurial ride:
#1. Know Why You’re Starting.
There are many different reasons for starting a business and it’s important that you get clear on why you are starting. Running a business is hard work, so getting clear on your ‘why’ will really help you in those more challenging days. Of course, creating a profitable business is a big reason many people start, though we recommend that you go one step further. For example, the Kulars started this business because they knew that the art of authentic Indian cooking was dying because it was just too hard for most to try to cook it at home. A lot of people, including me, have no idea how to cook with so many spices and get the flavours just right. Nimi, Roupi and Simi grew up eating Indian food everyday and it would be really sad if they were never able to cook it at home as an adult. So from that came in the passion for simplifying Indian cooking not only solved a problem personally had but it helped solve a problem for so many others who love Indian food who want to be able to cook healthy Indian meals at home. Maybe you also want to fulfill a creative passion or you really want to help people and make an impact in the world. What is the thing that drives you?
#2. Ask For Help.
If this is your first time stepping into the world of entrepreneurship or you’re creating something new, chances are really good that you’re going to need help along the way. This is not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of self-awareness in knowing when to ask for help in different areas of your business.
On top of that, it’s a good idea to join a local entrepreneurship group in your area if you can. Connect with like-minded people that you can meet up with on a regular basis. In the Kular Story they were fortunate enough to be accepted into a local food business incubator where they met daily with other food entrepreneurs. This helped us so much in growing the business.
#3. Start Before You’re Ready.
There is never an ‘ideal time’ to launch your business. In order to create a profitable business, you will need to step outside of your comfort zone at times and be willing to learn a lot. There is a popular saying that if what you’re launching, whether it be a product or your website, doesn’t make you a bit uncomfortable, then you took too long! It’s better to start with something, then refine it over time as you expose it to the people who will be using it, instead of waiting and waiting until you think it’s perfect. Just get started, create something, launch it, then refine it. Believe me, you’ll get much further this way!
So this was just how the journey began!
Very soon the idea of gourmet boxes was not limited to just relatives and friends it went on to different stores with more local food pop stores taking orders as well as a full high end stores going in for regular batches of boxes! When you get success it is important to maintain the same!
And same was important to the Kulars! They wanted to maintain their customer loyalty. Let me tell you how they just did it they had developed a guideline as to who can be their potential buyer as well as an ideal customer:
A buyer’s persona is a fictional, generalized character that builds a picture of your ideal customer. Once you know who that “customer” is then you can figure out how many of those potential customers actually exist in the world which will help define the size of your potential market.
Your buyer’s persona will include age, location, income and also psychographic information like interests, reasons for buying and concerns.
Completing your buyer’s persona is a big step as you now have your ideal customer in mind. Just think of this person. And remember, this persona will continue to evolve as you sell your products and discover more details about the customers who purchase it the most. So it doesn’t need to be perfect, just get something down on paper to start.
What do you have for selling? Handmade leather goods, crafts, food, handicraft items, paintings? With such super success stories I am sure you will not wait to discover your opportunities and I am also convinced the you will make your store a Winner!
